Baguio, Benguet suspend F2F classes for 5 August

BAGUIO CITY-- Anticipating heavy monsoon rains, local government units (LGUs) in Baguio City and several Benguet municipalities suspended face-to-face classes for Tuesday, 5 August, as persistent bad weather continued to threaten the province.

The class suspensions were announced Monday afternoon as a precautionary measure against the enhanced Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and a prevailing low-pressure area (LPA), which have brought continuous rainfall across Northern Luzon.

The state weather bureau warned that prolonged rainfall could trigger localized flooding, soil erosion, and landslides, particularly in mountainous areas.

In Baguio City, Mayor Benjamin Magalong ordered the suspension of in-person classes from preschool to Grade 12 in all public and private schools.

Several Benguet municipalities also issued similar directives. Tuba, Tublay, Kapangan, and Kibungan suspended face-to-face classes from preschool and day care to senior high school.

Meanwhile, La Trinidad, Sablan, and Atok expanded the suspension to cover all academic levels in both public and private educational institutions.

In La Trinidad, Executive Order No. 114 cited reports of ongoing soil erosion and landslides along critical access routes near schools, prompting the wider suspension.

To minimize disruptions to learning, local executive orders authorized schools to shift to alternative delivery modes, including modular and distance learning, where feasible.

Provincial and municipal disaster risk reduction and management offices remain on heightened alert as they continue monitoring flood- and landslide-prone areas. Authorities also urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid areas vulnerable to weather-related hazards.
