The nation’s council, learning together

The convention reminded us that local government is where national aspirations become reality. Every ordinance we enact, every peso we allocate, and every decision we make has the power to improve the everyday lives of our constituents.

Among the discussions that resonated with me were the importance of strategically aligning public funds for sustainable development and ensuring that local legislative initiatives support our country’s climate change goals. These are not merely technical subjects. They are commitments to protecting the future of our children, ensuring that food reaches every family’s table, and preparing our communities for the challenges that lie ahead.

Beyond the lectures and presentations, what I treasured most were the conversations with fellow councilors from all over the Philippines.

Each city and municipality has its own story of resilience and generosity. One shared how their community transformed idle public spaces into thriving vegetable gardens that now help feed vulnerable families.

Another spoke of volunteers who prepare meals for senior citizens living alone. There were local governments that found innovative ways to support small entrepreneurs after calamities, while others strengthened partnerships with schools to create safer learning environments for children.

These stories reminded me that generosity is not measured only by what we give financially. It is found in sharing ideas, listening to one another, and offering solutions that others can adapt for the benefit of their own communities. When one local government succeeds, its experience becomes a gift that can inspire another.

I also came away deeply impressed by Iloilo City itself. Its cleanliness, disciplined implementation of smoke-free policies, and well-maintained public spaces reflect something greater than strict regulations. They demonstrate what can happen when government and citizens work together with mutual respect and shared responsibility. Progress is built not only through infrastructure but also through a culture of discipline and care for one another.

As I returned to Las Piñas, I did so with renewed inspiration. Every lesson learned, every friendship formed, and every best practice shared during the convention is something I hope to translate into meaningful action for our city. Learning becomes truly valuable only when it is put into service.

A generous heart is also a teachable heart. It remains humble enough to listen, courageous enough to improve, and willing to share what it has learned so that others may flourish as well.

As Proverbs 27:17 beautifully reminds us: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

May we continue to sharpen one another in service, compassion, and good governance, for together we build not only stronger communities but a stronger nation.
