ILOILO CITY — Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas is encouraging homeowners to invest in solar panels as part of the city’s renewable energy campaign, saying the shift can significantly reduce electricity bills while providing long-term financial and environmental benefits.
Treñas said solar energy has become a practical investment for households amid rising electricity costs, allowing families to generate savings over time while reducing their dependence on conventional power sources.
“We encourage households to invest in solar panels because they provide long-term savings. It is an investment that will eventually help families reduce their electricity expenses,” the mayor said.
To encourage wider adoption of renewable energy, the city government grants a 20-percent discount on the basic Real Property Tax (RPT) to qualified homeowners who install solar panels.
The incentive is provided under City Regulation Ordinance No. 2009-358 and reinforced through the city’s SunRise Program, one of the flagship environmental initiatives of the Treñas administration aimed at promoting clean and sustainable energy.
City government records showed that 173 households had already availed themselves of the incentive as of July 2026.
