Five people, including a mother and her 11-month-old baby, died Sunday after an early morning fire trapped them inside a two-story residential building in Dagat-Dagatan, Caloocan City.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) reported the blaze broke out at 1:01 a.m. along Sinilyasi Street in Barangay 8 at a property owned by Marina Tabuen Escondo.

The building housed an auto repair shop on the ground floor and residential rooms on the second floor.

Investigators said the fire originated on the ground floor before rapidly spreading upstairs. Built partly with light materials, the second floor was quickly engulfed.

Although intense heat caused nearby electrical wires to explode and scorched the walls, the fire reached a second alarm at 1:09 a.m. as firefighters raced to contain it.

Emergency responders brought the fire under control by 1:24 a.m. and officially declared it out at 2:04 a.m.

Firefighters and volunteers recovered the bodies of the five victims — three females and two males — who were trapped in their second-floor rooms. No additional injuries were reported.

A total of 25 fire trucks, including five BFP units and 20 volunteer brigade trucks, along with two ambulances, responded to the emergency.

The fire affected at least one family of six individuals, leaving survivors with no remaining belongings.

"Many of our neighbors really lost everything," said resident Geraldiest Juanillo. "We were able to save nothing. For now, we will just sleep over elsewhere."

Surviving victims and affected relatives are currently under the care of the Caloocan Social Welfare Office and are taking temporary shelter at the local barangay hall.

"We have spoken to the families," said Barangay 8 Kagawad Rocky Badiana. "They will stay with me at the barangay hall for now."

Fire authorities estimated property damage at around P500,000. Arson investigators are continuing to probe the cause of the fire.
