Creating more value with less waste: Why

Creating more value with less waste: Why | Daily Tribune

At Aboitiz, we believe our unique advantage lies in the strength of our business ecosystem. As the Philippines’ first techglomerate with a diversified portfolio spanning energy, infrastructure, food, banking and financial services, and real estate, our greatest opportunity is not simply to make each business more sustainable, it is to connect them in ways that unlock greater value than any one company could create on its own.

Today, businesses face growing pressure from rising material costs, supply chain disruptions, climate risks and increasing stakeholder expectations. Responding to these challenges requires more than improving efficiency or reducing waste. It calls for rethinking how value is created.

Circularity offers exactly that opportunity. Rather than following the traditional “take, make and dispose” model, it encourages businesses to keep resources in productive use for longer, recovering, regenerating and repurposing them to create lasting economic, environmental and social value.

Since the Aboitiz ecosystem spans several industries, a more common operating model would be to see most companies improve circularity within their own operations. Instead, we established an ecosystem that can create circularity across our businesses.

We are already seeing this in action. Consider the packaging value chain. Coca-Cola Europacific Aboitiz Philippines’ Tapon to Ipon initiative helps recover post-consumer PET bottles and return them to the circular economy. PETValue Philippines transforms these bottles into food-grade recycled resin for new packaging, while materials that can no longer be recycled are given a second life through Republic Cement’s co-processing technology, where they become alternative fuel in cement manufacturing.

At LIMA Estate, greywater reuse, solar power, and materials recovery have created a living model of circular infrastructure, avoiding roughly 100 tons of CO₂ annually.

AboitizPower converts fly ash into eco-bricks nine times stronger than conventional blocks, while UnionBank has digitized 60 percent of transactions, financing circular investment as it shrinks its own footprint.

Circular economy succeeds even better when industries work together. No single company can create this system alone. But we can create it synergistically, together. That is the real opportunity ahead: moving from a portfolio of strong individual initiatives to one integrated OneAboitiz Circularity Platform — a shared materials marketplace, common procurement standards, and a single dashboard for tracking circular value across the Group.

Getting there requires a genuine shift in how we think. The operating question can no longer be “how do I reduce my own waste?” It must become “who else in our ecosystem can use this resource?” Circularity must compete for capital on the same terms as any other investment — quantified in cost saved, revenue created, and emissions avoided — and it must be designed into capex and procurement decisions from the outset, not retrofitted after the fact. That also means real governance: clear ownership, Group-wide targets, and integration into how we allocate capital.

Circular economy is a business strategy, not just an environmental program. The strongest opportunities come from collaboration across industries. Aboitiz already has credible examples across food, power, infrastructure, banking, construction, and partnerships. Our next competitive advantage is connecting these efforts into one integrated circular ecosystem. By doing so, we can reduce waste, lower costs, create new revenue streams, strengthen resilience, and support the Philippines’ transition to a more sustainable economy.

The future of circularity is not about building more recycling facilities. It is about building better business connections. For Aboitiz, our greatest opportunity is to transform from a collection of sustainable businesses into a truly circular business ecosystem.
