The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DoST-PNRI) has developed the Philippines’ first prototype house made with radiation-processed plastic tiles and panels. The project demonstrates the potential of nuclear science and radiation technology to upcycle plastic waste into durable construction materials.
DoST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. described the model as a practical example of how nuclear technology can provide innovative solutions for reprocessing plastic waste. The prototype was displayed at the DoST-PNRI compound during the first visit of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi on 26 November 2025.
The project is part of the Nuclear Technology for Controlling Plastic Pollution (NUTEC Plastics) initiative, launched by the IAEA to help countries monitor and reduce plastic pollution using nuclear science. The Philippines is among nine pilot countries implementing the program, with researchers showing that low-value plastics, such as sachets, can be converted into construction materials like tiles, bricks, and panels.
DoST-PNRI Director Carlo A. Arcilla explained that radiation processing strengthens the bonds in plastics, producing durable products. Radiation is applied using an electron beam or gamma rays, but it does not make the materials radioactive, making the technology safe for everyday use.
The initiative also seeks to encourage local communities to view plastic waste as a potential economic resource. Solidum emphasized that combining science, innovation, and business could transform plastic waste into livelihood opportunities while supporting circular-economy practices.
The prototype house was showcased as part of the first International High-Level Forum on NUTEC Plastics, held at Conrad Hotel, Pasay City, on 25 November 2025. The forum brought together ministers, scientists, regulators, innovators, and industry leaders to discuss strategies and challenges in addressing global plastic pollution. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who led the forum’s opening ceremony, highlighted the need to integrate scientific research and technological innovation into national and international decision-making.
The PREx model house aligns with DoST’s broader strategy under the OneDOST4U framework, which emphasizes solutions across human well-being, wealth creation, wealth protection, and sustainability. The program underscores the agency’s focus on science-based, innovative, and inclusive solutions for the Philippines.
