Senator Christopher “Bong” Go renewed his call for Congress to pass a new National Building Code following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s State of the Nation Address, which highlighted the need for stronger construction standards and disaster-resilient infrastructure.

Go said the country’s building regulations, last amended in 1977, should be updated to reflect advances in engineering and construction technology, as well as the growing risks posed by earthquakes, typhoons, floods and other natural hazards.

“It is time to amend the outdated National Building Code, which was last revised in 1977,” Go said.

He said his proposed New Building Code would strengthen standards governing the planning, design, construction, occupancy, maintenance, repair and renovation of buildings.

“We must ensure that every home, school, hospital, office and public building is safe and structurally sound, especially during disasters,” he said.

The measure also calls for regular inspections and maintenance of structures, saying safety should extend beyond construction.

“Safety does not end once a building is completed. It must be inspected and maintained regularly to ensure that it remains strong and safe,” Go said.

The senator also proposed stricter enforcement against the use of substandard construction materials and violations of safety standards. He added that local building officials and inspectors should be provided with additional personnel, training and technical resources.
