Hundreds of students, teachers, and personnel from various government agencies participated in simultaneous earthquake drills at three schools in Laoag City on Thursday as part of the city’s continuing disaster preparedness efforts.
The drills were held at Ilocos Norte National High School (INNHS), Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades (INCAT), and Shamrock Elementary School, with Ilocos Norte Governor Cecilia Araneta Marcos observing the exercises alongside representatives from various government agencies and uniformed services.
The activity simulated emergency response procedures during an earthquake, allowing participants to practice proper evacuation protocols and reinforce safety measures in the event of a major seismic event.
City officials emphasized the importance of regular disaster preparedness exercises, citing the country’s vulnerability to earthquakes and the lessons learned from previous seismic incidents that have caused damage and loss of lives.
They noted that while earthquakes cannot be prevented, communities can reduce risks through continuous training, preparedness, and public awareness. The drills also aimed to remind students and school personnel of the proper actions to take before, during, and after an earthquake to minimize casualties and injuries.
