The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Tuesday warned its personnel against soliciting or accepting gifts and favors, cautioning that violators face termination and up to 10 years in prison.
The DILG issued the internal memorandum following reports that some employees were using their positions to solicit money, gifts and other considerations from private individuals, local government units and national agencies.
It also reminded staff that soliciting or receiving anything of value in connection with official duties violates Republic Act 6713, the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees, and Republic Act 3019, the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.
“Public office is a public trust, and integrity, accountability, and professionalism must remain at the core of public service,” the department said in the memo.
Under RA 6713, personnel found guilty of taking gifts during administrative proceedings can be dismissed from service, fined up to P5,000, and sentenced to up to five years in prison.
Additional penalties under the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act include up to 10 years’ imprisonment, forfeiture of unexplained wealth, and perpetual disqualification from public office.
The DILG said it remains committed to enforcing ethical standards and ensuring its workforce serves with honesty and accountability.
