Jamike Jarin’s appointment as assistant coach of NLEX is no longer pushing through.

According to a reliable source, an old issue cropped up, leading to the last-minute vetoing of Jarin’s appointment as chief deputy of new Road Warriors coach Jimmy Alapag in the ongoing Governors’ Cup of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50.

Jarin had some success under the MVP Group after being part of the coaching staff of teams like Ateneo de Manila University, TNT Tropang 5G, San Beda University and Meralco.

But after leading the Red Lions to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 92 title in 2016, Jarin pulled off a surprise by jumping ship to National University (NU), a decision that didn’t sit well with the key executives at the MVP Group.

Jarin failed to make an impact in his three years with the Bulldogs in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, but it opened the doors to eventually become a PBA head coach through Phoenix Super LPG from 2023 until being replaced by Charles Tiu last year.

Jarin is coaching Lyceum of the Philippines University when Alapag invited him to join the NLEX coaching staff, which could have marked his return to the MVP Group after a long absence.

But his appointment was gunned down.

“His (Jarin) appointment is no longer pushing through after the top management recalled that he made the jump from San Beda to NU in 2017,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.

“That’s why you can’t see Jamike during NLEX practices anymore. He is also not attending the games. I think Jimmy is now looking for a new assistant coach.”

Jarin is Alapag’s personal choice since he took over the NLEX coaching job following a three-year stint with the Sacramento Kings in the National Basketball Association.
