Aston Martin’s Alonso joins critics of F1’s new era

  • Defending world champion Lando Norris claimed victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, securing his first win of the 2026 Formula 1 season after converting McLaren's strong race pace into a dominant result. Max Verstappen finished second for Red Bull, while Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third.

McLaren immediately asserted its advantage off the line. Norris and Oscar Piastri held the front row into Turn 1 and controlled the opening stages, swapping the lead through the first round of pit stops as the team managed strategy between its two drivers.

Further back, George Russell's race unraveled almost instantly after his Mercedes became stuck in anti-stall mode at the start, dropping him to the rear of the field.

The Briton spent the remainder of the afternoon carving his way back through the pack, using the W17's strong race pace to recover valuable positions.

The battle for the podium intensified as Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton traded places during the race. Following a pit stop, Verstappen produced one of the standout moves of the afternoon, braking late into Turn 1 and sweeping past both Arvid Lindblad and Hamilton in a single maneuver. The move allowed the Red Bull driver to regain track position and launch his charge toward second place.

McLaren's hopes of a one-two finish ended in disappointment during the closing stages. Piastri, who had looked capable of fighting for victory throughout the race, suddenly slowed with a mechanical issue before pulling off the circuit.

The retirement triggered a Virtual Safety Car, effectively ending the Australian's afternoon and handing McLaren the win through Norris while denying the team a maximum points haul.

Norris managed the restart cleanly and controlled the final laps to take the checkered flag, with Verstappen crossing the line in second and Antonelli securing another impressive podium finish for Mercedes after a composed and consistent drive.
