The Philippine National Police (PNP) urged motorcycle taxi riders Friday to use the 911 emergency hotline at the first sign of danger, part of a broader push to protect gig workers following recent deadly attacks on drivers.
PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said police are ramping up public awareness about the emergency hotline after separate fatal stabbings of motorcycle taxi drivers in Caloocan City and Cavite province. Suspects in both cases have been arrested.
Nartatez stressed that early reporting gives patrol units a better chance to intervene before violence occurs, aligning with directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla to bolster crime prevention.
“We are working tirelessly with ride-hailing platforms to secure our streets, and we urge the public to be our partners,” Nartatez said.
“Motorcycle taxi riders should not hesitate to call 911 at the first sign of danger,” he added.
The PNP chief also urged drivers to make the call if they feel followed or notice suspicious behavior, allowing dispatchers to coordinate a rapid response.
He sought to reassure ride-hailing drivers, noting that local police forces are increasing patrols in high-risk areas and coordinating directly with ride-hailing apps.
