Former Miss Universe R’Bonney Gabriel is determined to prove herself after facing tough criticism in her first challenge on the latest season of Project Runway.
Introducing herself to fellow contestants, Gabriel spoke about her multicultural roots, sharing that she was raised in Texas by a Filipina father and a mother from a small Texas town. She also revealed that spending the past year in the Philippines has influenced her creative vision, inspiring her to work with flowing silhouettes and luxurious fabrics while still incorporating the streetwear style shaped by her Houston upbringing.
For the premiere episode, Gabriel unveiled a recycled denim ensemble highlighted by a dramatic hood. Watching her design make its way down the runway, she was thrilled with the result.
“This garment wholeheartedly represents me, what I stand for, what I do, but the judges don’t know who made it. And you just never know what they’re looking for.”
The excitement, however, quickly gave way to disappointment after the judges found the design too restrained for the competition.
Judge Nina Garcia Banks acknowledged the garment’s craftsmanship but challenged Gabriel to push beyond safe choices.
“I think so many people would look at that and say, that’s good. But what we’re looking for is great.”
Banks added that while the outfit was wearable, it lacked the originality needed to stand out among a field of talented designers.
“We felt you came good, which is not good enough.”
Supermodel Heidi Klum echoed the sentiment, saying the design failed to make a memorable impression.
“For me, it’s too boring too. This is a design competition show. It’s not enough.”
The critiques left Gabriel emotional as she reflected on her performance. Fighting back tears, she admitted she was frustrated with herself but reaffirmed that fashion remains the dream she refuses to abandon.
“I’m just so mad at myself. My number one true calling is being a fashion designer. And that’s all I’ve ever worked hard for.”
Rather than letting the setback define her journey, Gabriel said she remains committed to improving and hopes to show the judges what she is truly capable of in the challenges ahead.
“It’s a decision that I made to bring this garment. And I just feel like I need a second chance.”
