  • Sen. Christopher "Bong" Go has urged investigators to uncover the full truth behind the deaths of Ateneo student-athletes Rene "Bobet" Baterbonia and Divine Adili, saying the tragedy must never happen again.

Speaking during a Senate hearing on youth-related incidents, Go stressed that the victims' families deserve a clear account of what happened during the team's training activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on 8 June.

Go also urged the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group to keep the families informed as the investigation progresses.

The senator renewed his push for Senate Bill No. 2261, which seeks to establish a comprehensive student-athlete safety and welfare policy. The measure would require schools and sports organizations to implement safety protocols, conduct risk assessments, prepare emergency action plans, ensure the presence of qualified medical personnel during sports activities, and provide adequate insurance coverage for student-athletes.

Go said the government must strengthen safeguards and address policy gaps to better protect young athletes.

He also recalled visiting Baterbonia's wake in Davao, describing the late basketball player as a young athlete who dreamed of helping his family through education and sports.

In response to the incident, Go filed resolutions expressing the Senate's condolences to the victims' families and calling for an inquiry to improve safety standards for student-athletes.
