Atasha Muhlach is preparing for one of the biggest challenges of her young career as she takes on the beloved role of Annie Batungbakal in the upcoming stage production Bongga Ka Day! The Annie Batungbakal Musical, a character forever associated with National Artist Nora Aunor.
Aware of the expectations that come with portraying such an iconic figure, Muhlach admitted she feels the weight of the role but is determined to let hard work speak for itself.
“Siyempre naman may pressure. Hanggang ngayon hina-handle ko pa rin. Ang alam ko lang is ibibigay ko talaga nang 100% ko. Walang shortcuts dito. As in, a-attend ko lahat ng rehearsals, gagawin kong extra work.”
To prepare, the actress said she has immersed herself in the story behind the character, studying Annie Batungbakal and revisiting the music of Hotdog, whose classic hit inspired the musical.
For Muhlach, being entrusted with the lead role is both emotional and deeply meaningful.
“Para sa akin po sobrang full circle moment, at sobrang humbling at heart-warming. And sobrang grateful po ako talaga.”
She also shared her excitement about returning to the theater, describing the production as an opportunity to grow as a performer while taking on a demanding new challenge.
Director Chris Millado said the musical offers more than nostalgia, explaining that it seeks to give new meaning to the word “bongga.”
“What makes the play or this musical bongga, is that we are redefining ‘bongga,’ that ‘bongga’ is not just about flashiness or sparkling things, but the real bongga comes from inside.”
Muhlach said she shares that perspective, believing that genuine confidence and authenticity are what truly make a person shine beyond appearances.
Joining Muhlach in the production are Sam Concepcion, Anthony Rosaldo and Jeff Moses as Romer, John “Sweet” Lapuz as Tarurit, KD Estrada as Burn, and a talented ensemble cast.
Bongga Ka Day! The Annie Batungbakal Musical is set to open this September at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, bringing a fresh stage interpretation of one of Philippine pop culture’s most enduring stories.
