Eala squanders lead, exits Cincy Open
Alex Eala’s run in the Wimbledon Championships came to an end after suffering a 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 loss to world No. 17 Jasmine Paolini of Italy in the Round of 16 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Monday.
Eala did everything she could within two hours and 22 minutes but she lost steam as Paolini advanced to the quarterfinal.
Despite the loss, the Rafael Nadal Acadamy alumna made history as she was the first Filipino to make it to the Last 16 of the third Grand Slam of the year.
Eala’s best moment during her run was dethroning world No. 3 Iga Swiatek of Poland, 7-6, 6-2, in the Round of 32 over the weekend.
She is assured to take home £300,000 or around P24 million for making it as far as the Round of 16 in Wimbledon.
Eala is also poised to reach a new career rank of No. 28 once Wimbledon is over.
