Alex Eala is not allowing the excitement surrounding her breakthrough Wimbledon campaign to distract her from what comes next.
Fresh off the best stretch of her young career, the 21-year-old Filipina tennis star has already shifted her focus to the North American hardcourt swing as she begins preparations for the US Open, choosing to remain grounded despite rising expectations following her climb into the upper tier of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.
“My focus right now is to prep for the US Open. Some good tournaments. And I have yet to reconvene with my team,” Eala said.
“I’m sure next week we will have a good meeting, and maybe set some more goals after that.”
Although many believe Eala has the potential to make another deep Grand Slam run after her impressive showing at Wimbledon, the Rafael Nadal Academy graduate insisted she has no interest in setting round-by-round targets.
Instead, she plans to approach New York the same way she has approached every tournament that has fueled her rapid rise.
“I don’t have a specific round in the US Open that I say I need to reach. The way I approach tournaments is match by match, round by round,” Eala said.
That patient mindset has become one of the foundations of Eala’s success, helping her navigate the biggest moments of her career while continuing to improve against the world’s top players.
It was on full display during Wimbledon, where Eala delivered a historic campaign that showcased her ability to compete with the sport’s elite and further established the Philippines as a growing force in international tennis.
Her inspiring run also captivated millions of Filipinos, who followed every victory and celebrated her achievements from halfway around the world.
Returning home after spending six months overseas, Eala said she was overwhelmed by the reception she received from fans.
“I genuinely felt everyone’s love and support during each match, so it’s wonderful to be home again,” she said.
The warm homecoming reinforced how her accomplishments now extend beyond the tennis court.
Eala has become a role model for young Filipino athletes, proving that competing — and succeeding — on the world’s biggest stages is within reach.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to inspire and elevate Filipino talent on the global stage,” Eala said.
While her success has also brought significant financial rewards, including a career-high payday from Wimbledon, Eala said she remains focused on securing her future rather than splurging.
“My first big investment in general, not just with my earnings from Wimbledon, but my earnings in general, I invest in my future,” Eala said.
“I save a lot of money. I like to be cautious with my money and I’m still so young.”
With her priorities firmly in place, Eala now turns her attention back to the tour, hoping to carry the confidence and momentum from her historic grass-court season into the hardcourt events leading up to the year’s final Grand Slam.
She will start her preparations for the US Open as she competes in the Washington Open on 27 July.
