Amid pressures from fellow lawmakers and supporters of Vice President Sara Duterte, a spokesperson for the House Prosecution Panel said that it was important for prosecutors to maintain focus on their constitutional duties.
In a press conference prior to the start of the first day of the impeachment trial, Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong said that it was important that prosecutors remain unfazed about the potential political impact that the proceedings may have.
“Regardless of the political pressure or the fear of risking political capital, we should not falter,” he said.
Adiong stressed that being overcome by such factors would only reinforce the “culture of impunity” which existed in the country.
He further noted that the only consideration of the House prosecutors should be anchored on the mandate of the constitution—to present evidence before the impeachment court.
“This is the time that we show the people that the Constitution serves the interest of the public,” he expressed.
As for Kabataan Partylist Rep. Renee Co, she said that the upcoming trial would benefit the public regardless of who they supported.
Co said that the trial would allow various allegations raised against Duterte to finally be addressed in what the defense previously described as the “proper forum.”
In light of the important constitutional proceeding ahead, the solon urged the public to stay tuned on the presentation of both the prosecution and the defense to the “burning questions” in the impeachment.
“So whether it is VP Sara, her supporters, everyone that wants to answer these burning questions, we should all stay tuned on the proceedings,” Co said.
“Let the evidence speak, let them have their day in court. Let these questions be answered,” she added.
