Two construction workers died after an excavation site caved in Sunday afternoon at a water facility project in Barangay Pamplona Dos, Las Piñas City, local authorities said Monday.
Fire Supt. Sonny Cario, the Las Piñas city fire marshal, confirmed the recovery of the bodies. The victims were digging a pit for the installation of a wastewater pump when the ground collapsed.
An initial investigation revealed that seven workers were inside the pit along Aquarius Street in the Pamplona Park Subdivision when the soil caved in at around 2 p.m. Four workers escaped the pit unharmed, while another was injured.
Two remained trapped until rescue teams recovered their bodies.
Police Lt. Col. Teoson Rosarito, the Las Piñas police assistant chief for operations, said in a radio interview that the injured survivor was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Water concessionaire Maynilad confirmed the incident occurred at one of its infrastructure projects, identified as a wastewater pumping facility under the Las Piñas Conveyance System Package 2.
"Maynilad confirms with deep sadness that the two contractor personnel who were trapped following yesterday's accident at our project site... have been retrieved and declared dead by authorities," the company said in a statement.
"We extend our deepest sympathies to their families, friends, and colleagues," it added.
