Local officials, historical groups and descendants of national heroes gathered Sunday to mark the 130th anniversary of the "Cry of Pugad Lawin" and unveil the newly renovated Pugad Lawin Shrine in Barangay Bahay Toro.

The event commemorated the August 1896 tearing of tax certificates, or cedulas, by members of the Katipunan led by Andres Bonifacio, an act of defiance that signaled the start of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule.

"On this day, we commemorate the 130th anniversary of the Cry of Pugad Lawin — a historic event in our country that gave freedom and independence to every Filipino," the local government said.

Representatives from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, civic organizations, and descendants of revolutionary figures Emilio Jacinto and Melchora Aquino attended the ceremony at the Dambana ng Pugad Lawin. Personnel from the Quezon City Police District rendered a 21-gun salute in honor of Bonifacio and fellow revolutionaries.

While the national government officially recognizes Pugad Lawin in Quezon City as the site and 23 August as the date of the event, historians continue to debate the precise location and timing.
