Britain's Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from Wimbledon after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in her lower right leg, ending her campaign before the tournament even began.
The 23-year-old announced her withdrawal late Sunday after a final scan confirmed the injury. She had been scheduled to face Croatia's Antonia Ruzic in the opening round on Monday.
"I've done everything possible to try to get to the start line but after a final scan tonight the niggle I've been managing has developed into a stress fracture," Raducanu said.
"I've been medically advised to stop pushing through."
The withdrawal came just hours after Raducanu told reporters she still hoped to compete despite concerns over her fitness.
Questions about her condition intensified last week after she was seen wearing a protective boot and missed training sessions because of what was believed to be a shin injury. Although she returned to practice over the weekend, she cut one session short and continued to wear strapping on her lower right leg.
"Playing at Wimbledon, in front of a home crowd, means everything to me, so this is really difficult to process," she said.
