Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong has ruled out seeking any local or national post in the 2028 National and Local Elections, distancing himself from speculation of a possible tandem with Vice President Sara Duterte.
The speculation emerged after lawyer Raul Lambino floated a possible Duterte-Magalong partnership for president and vice president in 2028.
Magalong, however, said earlier this week that he has no intention of running for any elective position once his current term ends.
He admitted he was surprised by the reports, initially thinking the remarks made by the PDP Laban official were a joke until they began circulating online.
The mayor said that leading a local government anchored on principles of good governance is already a challenging responsibility.
Rather than continuing in public office, Magalong said he intends to focus on youth-centered advocacy work after his term, particularly programs that promote good governance and responsible voting.
He underscored his decision by declaring that he would be the first and last member of his family to run for public office.
Magalong also said he is looking forward to the conclusion of his term in 2028. He is currently serving his third consecutive term as mayor of Baguio City.
Aside from his role in the city government, Magalong is a key figure in the “Mayors for Good Governance” movement, which advocates transparency, accountability and reform-oriented leadership.
With his statement, the mayor effectively put to rest speculation linking his name to national politics in the next election cycle.
