The mere thought of getting his hands on Floyd Mayweather pumps up Manny Pacquiao that he comes up short of being delirious when asked about the rematch.
“This is the fight that I have wanted for so long,” said Pacquiao on Wednesday while entertaining visitors at his posh Forbes Park home.
Netflix is streaming the rematch on 19 September from the Sphere in Las Vegas.
Though the second meeting will only happen more than 11 years after their historic clash, Pacquiao remains motivated.
Even though the fight is more than six months away, Pacquiao has already met key individuals in his team as they map out training camp plans.
Among those who came to see boxing’s only eight-division legend was Buboy Fernandez, who told DAILY TRIBUNE that a minimum three-month camp should be in place.
“I would like to see him start training in June,” Fernandez said.
The first time they rumbled in May 2015 at the MGM Grand, Mayweather coasted to a 12-round unanimous decision with Pacquiao later revealing that he fought with an injured hand.
Shortly after the fight, Pacquiao underwent an operation to deal with the injury.
Even wife Jinkee knows the magnitude of the September showdown that an early camp is vital.
“He (Pacquiao) told me how important this fight is so he knows and I know now that this is truly a big event,” said Jinkee, adding that she wouldn’t mind spending four months in the US to guarantee that her husband trains properly.
While Pacquiao is a very disciplined fighter and a hard worker in the gym, training in the Philippines can be problematic given his stature.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao, 47, can’t wait to get Mayweather back in the ring.
“God willing, this fight happens,” said Pacquiao, his voice oozing with excitement.
Because if it proceeds, Pacquiao is promising one thing.
“I am going out there to inflict pain.”
