ILOILO CITY — Road safety conditions in Sigma, Capiz have improved markedly following the enforcement of the municipality’s Speed Limit Ordinance in June 2025.

From June to December 2025, authorities recorded 2,683 speed limit violations along national highways within the town, reflecting intensified monitoring under the new traffic measure.

The policy, formally known as Municipal Ordinance No. 05, Series of 2024, took effect on 1 June 2025. It prescribes specific speed limits for all vehicle types within Sigma’s territorial jurisdiction and imposes penalties for non-compliance. The measure was crafted to address reckless driving and prevent road crashes.

Municipal Administrator Glezel Villa confirmed the ordinance’s impact.

“Vehicular accidents have decreased since the Municipal Speed Limit Ordinance was implemented in June 2025,” Villa said. “The presence of 24/7 speed cameras has significantly improved driver behavior and strengthened road safety in our municipality.”

Sigma is the first Local Government Unit in Western Visayas to enforce a speed limit ordinance through round-the-clock speed camera operations along national highways. The system feeds into a centralized command center, allowing authorities to monitor and document violations in real time.

Speed regulations are aligned with road classifications under Republic Act No. 4136, ensuring compliance with national transportation laws.

During a media presentation and joint press conference last year, the Land Transportation Office Western Visayas expressed support for Sigma’s initiative, citing its strong potential to reduce accidents and promote disciplined driving.

With early indicators showing positive results, local officials said they will sustain strict enforcement, positioning Sigma’s technology-driven traffic management system as a possible template for other municipalities seeking to curb road mishaps.
