The Philippine Army (PA), through the Headquarters Support Group (HHSG, PA), in partnership with the Royal Thai Army (RTA), conducted the first iteration of the Martial Arts Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE), focusing on Arnis and Muay Thai, from 17 to 20 February 2026, at Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

The Martial Arts SMEE is hosted alternately by the RTA and the PA and is an addition to their existing SMEEs under agreed joint activities scheduled until 2027.

Practical exercises on Arnis and Muay Thai were conducted with participating troops from the Special Service Center, HHSG, applying the techniques in combat scenarios. A demonstration also took place during the Royal Thai Armed Forces Anniversary celebration, highlighting the traditional and historical significance of both martial arts.

The inclusion of the Martial Arts SMEE under the Agreed-To-Activities 2026–2027 aims to enhance both armies’ combative techniques through the traditional disciplines of Arnis and Muay Thai.

The initiative also supports the institutionalization of Arnis as a core combative skill and reinforces the warrior ethos, in line with the guidance of Army Chief Lt. Gen. Antonio G. Nafarrete.
