ILOILO CITY — Respiratory infections and lifestyle-related illnesses remain the primary health concerns in Antique, according to a preliminary morbidity report released by the Provincial Health Office.
Health Education and Promotion Officer Irene Duldoco identified acute respiratory infection, hypertension and pneumonia as the leading causes of illness in the province. Other frequent cases include urinary tract infections, respiratory tuberculosis, and injuries from animal bites.
During a provincial radio broadcast, Duldoco urged residents to adopt healthier habits to curb preventable diseases. She emphasized that proper nutrition and early medical consultation are critical to managing the province’s top health conditions.
Duldoco recommended that residents follow the “Pinggang Pinoy” nutrition guide, maintain a daily intake of eight to 10 glasses of water, and ensure adequate sleep. She also warned against smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, advocating instead for regular physical activity.
Beyond physical ailments, the health office plans to intensify mental health initiatives in 2026, specifically targeting the youth. The province will begin training peer support groups to serve as educators and first-line listeners in schools and local communities.
Duldoco noted that stress management training is a priority for preventing mental health crises among adolescents.
“When young people are equipped with proper stress management skills, they are less likely to reach a breaking point and more capable of coping with difficult situations,” she said.
The Provincial Health Office stated it will continue to integrate physical and mental health programs throughout the year, citing community wellness as a requirement for regional development.
