The throne of Mount Olympus has a new occupant.

In the season two finale of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Courtney B. Vance steps into the role of Zeus, marking the god’s first on-screen appearance since the passing of Lance Reddick, who originally portrayed the ruler of the gods before his death in March 2023.

Taking over a character so closely associated with a beloved actor was not something he approached lightly, Vance said. “Lance was a close friend. I wish he were here. But I’m thankful to honor him by continuing what he started.” That sense of reverence followed Vance onto the Vancouver set, where he addressed the cast and crew directly, asking for a moment of silence to remember Reddick before filming began.

The gesture set the tone. Cast members later shared that Vance made a point of expressing gratitude throughout the shoot, acknowledging the legacy he was inheriting rather than trying to overwrite it. Executive producers echoed that sentiment, noting that the goal was continuity, not replacement — a Zeus who feels connected to what came before while still allowing space for a new interpretation.

Story-wise, Zeus’s return is brief but pivotal. Although Rick Riordan’s Sea of Monsters does not feature the god directly, the series makes a deliberate choice to include him. According to the show’s creative team, the finale scene lays critical groundwork for future seasons and reframes key mythology within the show’s universe.

The moment unfolds in a flashback involving Thalia Grace, Zeus’s demigod daughter, portrayed by Tamara Smart. Long believed to have been transformed into a tree to save her life, Thalia’s fate is revealed in a harsher light. Zeus intervenes during a battle at Camp Half-Blood, not to rescue his daughter, but to demand her loyalty in an impending war. When she refuses to be used as a tool of the gods, his response is swift and unforgiving. It’s a darker, more ruthless take on Zeus.
