Manila solon files cyberlibel case vs Barzaga

Manila Representative Rolando Valeriano filed a third cyberlibel complaint Wednesday against Cavite Representative Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga over social media posts alleging that members of the National Unity Party accepted bribes from a prominent businessman.
The complaint, filed before Manila Prosecutor Giovanni Lim, centers on a viral post in which Barzaga allegedly claimed NUP lawmakers received money from billionaire Enrique Razon during meetings at the Solaire resort and casino.
Barzaga allegedly stated the payments were made prior to the 2025 elections in exchange for supporting the reelection of House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
Valeriano, a member of the NUP, called the post a malicious and baseless attack on the integrity of the political bloc.
“Baseless accusations of bribery are not harmless political commentary,” Valeriano said in a statement. “They are accusations of criminal conduct, broadcast to the public as if they were established fact. If you claim that legislators were bribed, then you have the duty to prove it.”
The complaint argues that the post violates the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. Valeriano’s legal team stated that the accusations were made with “reckless disregard for the truth” and were amplified across social media, causing significant reputational harm to identifiable members of the NUP.
Valeriano stressed that the allegations were not merely personal but institutional.
“This is an affront to the entire NUP, not just to one member,” he said. “It was intended to stain a whole bloc of legislators through one sweeping allegation.”
Barzaga has not yet issued a public statement regarding this latest filing. This is the third such complaint Valeriano has filed against the Cavite lawmaker in recent weeks involving similar social media claims.
