BAGUIO CITY — The Department of Health Cordillera reported that about 200 individuals are currently undergoing treatment for viral hepatitis B at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC).
Development Management Officer III Darwin Babon of DOH Cordillera said the most affected age group is between 35 and 49 years old, noting that hepatitis B requires lifelong medical management once a person is infected.
Health officials said lifestyle choices significantly contribute to the severity of liver-related illnesses, particularly excessive alcohol consumption and smoking, which can worsen the condition.
The cost of treatment remains a major challenge, with a single bottle of medication ranging from P1,800 to P2,100. BGHMC currently serves as the only specialized treatment facility for hepatitis B patients in the Cordillera region.
The DOH said it is working on measures to reduce the financial burden on patients, including increasing the supply of viral hepatitis rapid diagnostic test kits and coordinating with PhilHealth on the possible development of a dedicated benefit package for hepatitis B treatment.
