Baby boost

The Radio City Rockettes, the longest-running precision dance company in the United States, recently celebrated their 100th year at New York’s Radio City Music Hall where they have been performing since the 1930s. Former dancers joined in the centennial anniversary celebration, including Alina Silver.
Silver, 43, shared a viral video of her audition for the group in 2016 with the New York Post (NYP). In the video that drew a combined 11.7 million views on Instagram and TikTok, she was kicking eye-high, tap dancing, and pirouetting while seven months pregnant with her first child.
The video was given to her by the show director so she could share the memorable audition with her daughter.
Silver told NYP that she danced with the Rockettes for a total of 12 years before retiring to focus on her growing family.
Meanwhile, the importance of having a baby is shown in a different way in China.
Although it is the second most populous country after India with 1.4 billion people, China’s birth rate has been plummeting, causing authorities to worry about an aging population and a declining workforce.
One reason for the declining birth rate is that young adults are delaying having children due to the high cost of living. Women are also avoiding getting pregnant.
To address the issue, the Chinese government lifted the sales tax exemption on contraceptives, including condoms and birth control pills.
Starting today, there will be a 13-percent sales tax on such contraceptives, according to NYP.
Officials hope that the more expensive contraception would help usher in a baby boom.
For those who will get pregnant because they can’t afford condoms and pills, the government would provide them with tax-free childcare services, extended maternity leave, 30-day paternity leave, and a cash allowance of 3,600 yuan per year for each child born after 1 January 2026, according to NYP.
