Families displaced by Super Typhoon “Uwan” in Mandaue City have begun receiving temporary housing following the turnover of modular shelter units (MSUs) by the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) to the city government on Thursday.

The DHSUD said the MSUs will serve as transitory shelters for residents who lost their homes during the typhoon. The units are part of a planned Bayanihan Village, which will include basic facilities such as a day care center, clinic, and training or livelihood spaces.

According to the agency, around 200 MSUs have been committed for Mandaue City, with 50 units initially turned over to the local government. Additional units are expected to be deployed as the site is developed.

DHSUD Secretary Jose Ramon Aliling said the shelters are intended to provide safer and more dignified temporary housing for disaster-affected families, in line with national government directives on post-disaster recovery.

Assistant Secretary Johnson Domingo represented the DHSUD during the turnover ceremony, which was presided over by Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Jovito Ouano.

The DHSUD said similar MSUs have previously been deployed to areas affected by earthquakes in Cebu and Davao Oriental, as well as to San Juan City, where the units are currently occupied by fire victims.

The agency added that it plans to continue deploying modular shelters to local government units affected by disasters, depending on available resources and assessed needs.
