The Philippine National Police (PNP) seized P579 million worth of contraband and arrested 604 suspects in 666 anti-smuggling operations conducted nationwide between 26 August and 27 November.
Acting PNP Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. reported that the confiscated items included P512.6 million worth of smuggled cigarettes, P6.8 million in agricultural goods, P58.8 million in assorted illegal merchandise, and P1.29 million in petroleum products. All arrested suspects are currently detained and facing charges.
Over the same three-month period, the PNP Highway Patrol Group recovered 432 stolen vehicles, consisting of 326 cars and 106 motorcycles.
Authorities also arrested 113 suspects linked to vehicle theft, highway robbery and “rent-tangay” schemes. Nine firearms were seized, and 92 related cases were filed.
Nartatez reminded motorists to stay vigilant amid heavier holiday traffic and warned vehicle owners and rental businesses to be cautious.
He cited that “rent-tangay” incidents, where vehicles are rented and subsequently stolen or sold illegally, typically increase toward year-end.
