The Philippines was the only Asian country to back the United Nations Partition Plan on 29 November 1947, a decision that helped pave the way for the establishment of the State of Israel.

Speaking on the 78th anniversary of the historic vote, Israel’s Ambassador to the Philippines Dana Kursh said the decision reflected “moral clarity and courage” and remains a defining moment in bilateral relations.

Kursh also highlighted President Manuel L. Quezon’s earlier choice to open Manila to more than 1,300 Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Europe, which she said laid the foundation for a lasting partnership between the two nations.

“From these historic choices, a strong friendship has grown, reflected today in cooperation across agriculture, water management, health solutions, cybersecurity, fintech, telecommunications, sustainable development, and disaster preparedness,” Kursh said.

She added that the anniversary serves as a reminder of the Philippines’ support for recognition, dignity, and the principles and values that continue to guide relations with Israel.
