Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday to discuss expanding cooperation between Manila and Kyiv, focusing on food security, agriculture and digitalization.
In a social media post, Zelensky expressed condolences for lives lost and damages caused by recent typhoons in the Philippines.
“I spoke with the President of the Philippines, @bongbongmarcos. I expressed condolences to the President for the lives lost and the destruction caused by the typhoons,” he said.
Zelensky briefed Marcos on Ukraine’s coordination with the United States regarding efforts to secure peace amid Russia’s continuing invasion.
“I am grateful for the Philippines’ support for the peace efforts, for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and for the clear stance,” he added.
The Philippines has consistently called for peace in the region and backed Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
During the call, both leaders identified shared priorities in agriculture and digital transformation. Zelensky said the Philippines also expressed interest in Ukrainian expertise and emerging technologies, signaling possible partnerships.
“We agreed that our teams will follow up on all these matters in the near future,” Zelensky said.
Zelensky visited Malacañang in 2024, where he announced plans to open a Ukrainian Embassy in Manila — a move Marcos supported. The Philippines and Ukraine have maintained diplomatic ties since April 1992.
