Telco giant Globe Telecom has vowed to put up “Libreng Tawag, Charging, and WiFi sites” in typhoon-hit Quezon Province, as most municipalities there have no electricity, data connection due to damaged cell sites, as well as no mobile phone signals following the onslaught of Super Typhoon Uwan.
This came after residents of Guinayangan, Quezon, appealed for the telco provider to provide immediate help amid difficulties calling their relatives for assistance.
Globe Telecom, through its Corporate Communications Team, was quick to respond and said they will immediately dispatch “Libreng Tawag, Charging, and WiFi sites” in the province in the coming days.
The Quezon Electric Cooperative (QUEZELCO), on the other hand, said it is now inspecting toppled electric posts and broken power lines in various barangays and municipalities, but noted that power restoration may take more than a month.
Globe has already activated ‘Libreng Tawag, Charging, and WiFi (LT/LC/LW)’ services in eight confirmed areas to assist affected residents. These include: Cauayan City, Isabela; Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (two sites); Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija; Naga City, Camarines Sur; Lasam, Cagayan; Dalakit, Catarman, Northern Samar; and Baldios, Santa Ignacia, Tarlac.
Additional activations are ongoing in other affected provinces.
Through Alagang Globe, 600 meals were also distributed to 200 families in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, and Aparri, Cagayan, as part of Globe’s continuing relief operations for communities impacted by the storm.
“Network restoration is progressing steadily, with 100% availability in Aklan, Antique, Biliran, Bohol, Capiz, Eastern Samar, Guimaras, Iloilo, Northern Samar, Western Samar, and Siquijor, 99% in Palawan, and ongoing restoration in Cebu (95.5%), Leyte (93.3%), Negros Oriental (98%), Negros Occidental (79%), and Southern Leyte (67%),” Globe said in a statement.
Ongoing efforts in Tino-hit areas
Meanwhile, the telco firm said it continues to provide connectivity and assistance in areas previously impacted by Typhoon Tino, with 100% network availability in Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte, 99.9% in Palawan (SLZ), and 99.27% in Cebu Province.
“Libreng Charging and WiFi stations” also remain active in four barangays in Cebu City—Guba, Angsungot, Binaliw, and Cambinucot—from November 9 to 11, operating daily from 8 AM to 9 PM to support residents’ communication needs.
“Globe remains closely coordinated with local government units and partners to sustain connectivity and deliver vital assistance to affected communities. For ongoing updates, visit GlobeICON,” it said.
