Construction of the Piggatan Detour Bridge in Alcala, Cagayan has reached 34 percent completion as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) accelerates the project under a direct order from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to quickly establish an alternative route.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon reported that the emergency detour bridge is being rushed “double time” with a target completion of 60 days.
The project is designed to provide immediate relief for motorists and ensure the smooth flow of goods and commodities into and out of Cagayan Province.
Dizon said this is the quickest solution to ease the burden of motorists for a smooth traffic flow across Cagayan after the original bridge collapsed.
The construction, which hit the 34 percent mark on its 10th day, involves continuous boring of steel posts and full welding to guarantee the structure’s strength in carrying heavy truckloads and other vehicles.
Dizon cited that he is closely monitoring the activity to provide regular updates to the President.
To recall, the original Piggatan Bridge, a 45-year-old structure, collapsed on 6 October 2025, after a 10-wheeler truck reportedly exceeded its weight capacity.
Separately, the DPWH deployed assessment teams following the collapse of a section of the Bukidnon-Davao City Road in Palacapao, Quezon. Secretary Dizon has ordered the temporary closure of the affected area pending an investigation and urged motorists to take alternate routes.
Motorists traveling from Cagayan de Oro City to Tagum City can pass through Junction Sayre Highway, Poblacion Valencia City, Bukidnon, via the Kapalong–Talaingod-Valencia Road.
Meanwhile, those traveling from Camp 1 Maramag, Bukidnon, to Davao City are advised to take Junction Bukidnon-Davao City Road to the Cotabato Boundary via Carmen-Kabacan-Matalam-Kidapawan, Cotabato-Digos City, Davao.
