The Department of Justice (DoJ) on Friday clarified that former House Speaker Martin Romualdez is not being considered as a state witness, despite recent reports suggesting otherwise.
The DoJ emphasized that there is no legal or factual basis for this. To become a state witness, an individual must formally apply through the DoJ’s Witness Protection, Security and Benefits Program (WPSB), after which the application is carefully evaluated. So far, Romualdez has not submitted an application.
The DoJ assured the public that all investigations will be conducted fairly and swiftly, stressing that “no one will be spared if the evidence so warrants.”
The department also urged the public to ignore false information and political propaganda that misuses legal terms, and to rely only on official DoJ statements.
“Our commitment is to the rule of law, guided by facts, not politics,” the DoJ said.
