The Northern Luzon Naval Command (NLNC) on Monday confirmed the unauthorized presence of multiple PLA-Navy and China Coast Guard vessels in the vicinity of Batanes from 7 to 8 August.

NLNC spokesperson LCmdr. Edmund Aguila said these vessels were detected during ongoing sovereignty and maritime patrol operations conducted by BRP Jose Rizal (FF150) and BRP Emilio Jacinto (PS35), both patrol vessels assigned to NLNC's Naval Task Force 11.

Upon detection, the Philippine Navy warships promptly initiated radio challenge protocols.

Following continuous monitoring and the assertive presence of both BRP Jose Rizal (FF150) and BRP Emilio Jacinto (PS35), the said Chinese vessels were observed to have altered their courses.

“The Armed Forces of the Philippines, particularly the Philippine Navy, remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding our nation’s sovereignty,” NLNC Commander, Commodore De Sagon, said.

“These ongoing patrols in the northern maritime domain reaffirm our dedication to protecting our sovereign rights and enforcing maritime law with vigilance and resolve,” he added.

The Northern Luzon Naval Command strongly condemned the unauthorized presence of foreign government vessels within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), especially in the waters surrounding Batanes, which fall squarely within Philippine sovereign jurisdiction.

“NLNC remains resolute in its mission to defend the country’s maritime territory, maintain uninterrupted maritime domain awareness, and protect Filipino communities and maritime resources, particularly in the nation’s most critical and remote northern frontiers,” it added.
