Secretary of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) of the Philippines, Henry Aguda, confirmed on Saturday that the agency is taking steps to phase out the still-existing 3G network in telecommunication companies.

In an interview, Aguda revealed that the DICT has coordinated with major telecom providers to transition from 3G to 4G and 5G networks. The Philippines is on the verge of becoming the last country to phase out 2G and 3G connections.

“Globe (Telecom) has already phased out 3G, DITO Telecommunity never had 3G to begin with, and Smart (Communications) is now rushing to phase it out,” he said.

According to Aguda, data gathered on network improvements show significant progress, with expectations to exceed earlier projections, with connection speeds rising to around 80 percent to 90 percent. “Why is this important? Because once everything shifts to 4G, you’ll be able to use apps much faster,” he added.

The DICT also aims for the Philippines to become a "center for telecom fiber connectivity" following the end of President Marcos' term.

Aguda further discussed the 2017 law mandating free internet access in all public places. “I follow the law. The President told me to follow the law, and regarding the placement (of Wi-Fi), it turns out this is mandated by law. So we will expedite it — all public places, schools, hospitals, tourism spots, and transport hubs should have free Wi-Fi by the end of the President's term,” he said.
