Globe Telecom Inc. has joined the Asia United Gateway East (AUG East) submarine cable system consortium to deliver faster, more reliable internet for consumers and businesses as demand for AI-powered and data-heavy technologies grows.
The company said over the weekend that the 8,900-kilometer submarine cable system will connect major digital hubs Singapore and Japan, with landing points in the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, South Korea and Taiwan.
It is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2029.
For Globe president and CEO Carl Cruz, the company’s participation in the consortium will help future-proof the country’s digital infrastructure and meet the rising bandwidth demands brought by AI and other data-intensive applications.
Digital backbone strengthened
“This new data superhighway strengthens our nation’s digital backbone. It gives businesses the scale, speed, and reliability they need to compete globally and embrace technologies that can uplift lives and drive inclusive progress for all Filipinos,” he added.
Built with a high optical fiber count, AUG East will deliver massive capacity, equivalent to millions of ultra-high-definition streams running simultaneously.
The system aims to enhance network reliability, especially during natural disasters.
Raymond Policarpio, Globe Business VP and head of strategy management and business investments, securing a stake in the digital thoroughfare will “enable enterprise clients to leverage cutting-edge technologies, drive innovation, and expand their global reach.”
“As AI-powered applications become increasingly pervasive, the demand for resilient, high-capacity international connectivity will also experience a surge,” he added.
