The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Sorsogon offered financial relief to the widow of a line worker who died in an occupational accident.
The line worker passed away last December in Juban, Sorsogon.
According to DOLE Bicol Regional Director Imelda Gatinao, the widow received a financial settlement of ₱1.2 million, as well as insurance claims and separation pay.
This follows a comprehensive investigation that uncovered violations of occupational safety and health (OSH) standards and general labor standards (GLS) committed by her husband’s employer.
Per the investigation of DOLE labor inspectors, some critical lapses in safety protocols contributed to the fatal incident, prompting the department to intervene and hold the company accountable to enforce corrective safety measures.
Gatinao also emphasized that the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the need to uphold labor and safety standards across industries.
“Let this serve as a strong call to all employers: compliance with labor and safety standards is not optional; it is a moral and legal responsibility," Gatinao said.
"We commend our labor inspectors and staff for their diligence and compassion throughout this process," she added.
More than a financial obligation, Gatinao also reaffirmed that ensuring workplace safety and securing just compensation for workers remain central to its mission.
