Davao’s most prestigious social and civic organization, the Hijos de Davao, celebrated its founding on 29 June with a formal gala at the Dusit Davao Grand Ballroom. Now in its 61st year, the annual affair, which coincides with the feast day of Davao City’s patron saint, San Pedro, and gathers an esteemed crowd of local leaders, founding families, and regional icons, all bound by a desire to preserve legacy and community and celebrates the camaraderie among the families who made the city their home.

In his welcome message, Hijos de Davao president Jose Claro Hizon Velez emphasized the significance of the organization. “For more than six decades, Hijos de Davao has stood as a symbol of unity, heritage, and civic spirit — bringing together generations of Dabawenyos in a shared commitment to our culture, our values and our beloved city. This anniversary is not only a celebration of our past, but also a reaffirmation of our continuing journey as a family, as a community and as citizens devoted to Davao’s growth and legacy.”

In the past year, Hijos de Davao supported the Archdiocese of Davao’s wide-ranging initiatives, which holistically encompass social welfare, education, peace-building and environmental advocacy.

The organization also supported the Fenixia Foundation, whose programs are specifically tailored to foster the social and mental well-being of young adults with disabilities, providing crucial activities and support that empower them to lead more fulfilling lives, and the Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA) Davao Chapter, an indispensable pillar, committed to delivering accessible and affordable mental health services.

This year’s muse is Ayisha Madlen T. Lagdameo, the daughter of Anton and Dawn Lagdameo who wore a dusty rose gown and a custom-made tiara featuring pearls, aquamarines and natural diamonds by Davao jeweller Emilia Sitjar Jewellery.

A student entering her junior year at the International School Manila, the 16-year-old is a multi-talented artist with a promising future in dance and has already amassed an impressive list of accomplishments. She has her sights set on prestigious universities like New York University, Yonsei University, and The Juilliard School. Ayisha is escorted by Seve Diago, son of Rene and Claudine Diago.

The time-honored tradition of the Rigodon de Honor followed. A traditional Filipino dance that originated during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines, the night’s performance features the city’s civic, social and business leaders joined by Davao’s outstanding young citizens.

The event also features the Filipiniana collection of Davao designer Bobby Castillo, with the pieces modeled by the children of the members of the association.
