Fourteen years ago, inspired by the popular show America’s Got Talent, Casino Español de Cebu bravely presented its very first talent show. The participants were exclusively members brought together by their love of singing and dancing. Little did we know then that this would become a tradition we would carry on for many years.

A fortnight ago, the tradition once again came alive as we showcased the incredible talents of our members.

The Salon de España was filled with music, laughter and applause as members and guests gathered for another talent night, ably hosted by toastmaster Mayen Angbetic Tan.

The show brought together singers, dancers and musicians. Soloists Jimmy Picornell and Elise Ko impressed with their powerful voices, while married couple Bernie Carpio and Jasmine Cuizon charmed everyone with their rendition of Disney songs. Eighty-seven-year-old Rene Kintanar played the cello, accompanied by his wife, Joy.

A highlight was the graceful dancing of architect Tessie Javier, Cely Chiongbian and Lorna Quisumbing. The ladies danced the rumba and tango with ease, moving gracefully to the music and displaying excellent rhythm and timing. Their confident footwork, elegant turns and natural chemistry made their performances especially enjoyable to watch. They clearly knew how to work the floor, and the appreciative applause showed just how much the attendees enjoyed them.

The audience was also fascinated by Tony Quisumbing on the harmonica, Bess Zanoria on the marimba and Thirdy Tan on the keyboard. Tony’s soulful harmonica playing added a nostalgic touch to the evening, while Bess brought the rich, resonant tones of the marimba to life. Thirdy likewise entertained on the keyboard, adding another musical dimension to the program.

The club employees brought plenty of energy with a fabulous Tahitian number, while general manager Anton Sloot got everyone singing along to “Sweet Caroline.” His warm stage presence and infectious enthusiasm made the crowd’s participation even more spirited.

Bringing the evening to a beautiful close were Rico and Bobby Gandionco, together with David Chan, who performed a lovely medley of Beach Boys songs. Their heartfelt rendition, complemented by their smooth harmonies, made for a fitting and memorable finale, leaving the audience warmly applauding and savoring the last moments of a wonderful evening.
