The Manila Electric Company (Meralco), led by business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan, has energized a state-of-the-art substation in Parañaque City to meet the rising energy demand in one of Metro Manila’s fastest-growing business districts.

The new ASEANA 115 kilovolt (kV) - 34.5 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Substation is designed to serve the bustling ASEANA City and nearby developments, reinforcing Meralco’s capacity to provide reliable electricity to key southern economic hubs.

The project includes an 83-megavolt-ampere (MVA) power transformer, indoor 115-kV and 34.5-kV GIS switchgears, a 14.4 MVAr capacitor bank, and a 1.2-ohm neutral reactor. Meralco also constructed a dedicated GIS building equipped with advanced protection and control devices.

Beyond improving reliability, the facility is projected to reduce system losses by 373,392 kilowatt-hours (kWh), which translates to significant savings for customers.

“To ensure power continuity in the area, the ASEANA GIS Substation alleviates the heavy loading of existing PAGCOR-1 transformer banks and provides enhanced switching flexibility during contingencies,” Meralco said in a statement.

As a smart substation, the new facility integrates advanced network automation technology and will serve various business and commercial establishments in the area, including Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Sequoia Hotel, Hop Inn Hotel, and several residential and corporate towers.

“With the energization of ASEANA Substation, we continue to deliver on our commitment to invest heavily on infrastructure and projects that ensure power availability especially in expanding economic hubs,” said Froilan J. Savet, Meralco First Vice President and Head of Networks. “This project plays a key role in improving system reliability and serving the dynamic power requirements of our customers.”

The substation is part of Meralco’s long-term roadmap to build a smarter, more resilient, and future-ready grid across its service areas.
