The Philippine Information and Communications Technology Organization (PICTO), an umbrella organization of electronics, information technology, broadcast and telecommunications industries in the country, has expressed its support for Information and Communications Secretary Henry Aguda.

To recall, Aguda, on 17 June, was reappointed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as secretary of the DICT, but is still awaiting confirmation from the Commission on Appointments, after the CA bypassed his ad interim appointment as DICT chief due to “lack of material time.”

Distinguished private sector career

With this, PICTO president Mohamed Kanouni said the organization is supporting Aguda because of his distinguished career in the private sector, especially his leadership within the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC), which uniquely positions him to lead the country’s digital transformation at this pivotal moment.

The said group maintained that industry stakeholders, including IT-BPM and telecommunications companies, are committed to working collaboratively under his leadership to build a connected, secure, and inclusive Philippines.

Kanouni further believed that the ICT industry continues to face pressing challenges: slow internet connectivity, cybersecurity threats, digital inequality, infrastructure gaps, and workforce skill shortages.

“Digital First” vision

“Secretary Aguda’s ‘Digital First’ vision provides a strategic and proactive approach to tackling these issues. By prioritizing digital infrastructure, innovation, and reducing bureaucratic inefficiencies, this vision has paved the way for enhanced ICT services, greater economic inclusion, and sustainable growth, especially in underserved communities,” he said.

Moreover, the tech trade group leader stressed that in Aguda’s first three months in office, he correctly focused on digital inclusion, infrastructure development, and cybersecurity.

“These efforts have empowered citizens to engage in commerce, education, and personal communication within a more secure and accessible digital landscape. His push for e-governance and IT workforce development is already streamlining public services and enhancing government efficiency,” reiterated Kanouni.

Exemplary track record

Furthermore, the PICTO head pointed out that Secretary Aguda’s exemplary track record in both public and private sectors underscores his qualifications to lead the DICT and fulfill the President’s mandate of ethical and forward-looking digital governance.

“We urge all stakeholders to support this vision and join in our shared mission of building a digitally empowered nation,” he said.
