
GENERAL SANTOS CITY — A former broadcast journalist and activist was shot dead inside a massage spa in Barangay Lagao, General Santos City, on Monday, 23 June, prompting strong reactions from local media and human rights advocates.
The victim was identified by authorities as Jejhon Ali “Toti” Macalintal, a former radio anchor of RPN-General Santos. He was also known for his active involvement in grassroots movements and his affiliation with progressive organizations such as Kadamay and Karapatan. A proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, Macalintal was widely recognized as a vocal advocate for social justice and marginalized groups.
According to initial police reports, the incident occurred inside a massage spa where Macalintal was reportedly an acupuncturist. An unidentified gunman entered the establishment, approached the victim, and shot him at close range.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after and rushed the victim to a nearby hospital.
Police authorities are currently pursuing all possible angles in the investigation, including the potential link of the killing to Macalintal’s past media work and activism.
Surveillance footage from nearby establishments is being reviewed, and several witnesses have been invited for questioning.
Macalintal’s former colleagues in media and activist communities condemned the killing, calling it a cowardly attack on a man who had long stood for the voiceless. Human rights group Karapatan urged authorities to treat the case with urgency and transparency.
The LGBTQ+ community also mourned Macalintal’s death, remembering him as a passionate and fearless advocate for equality and human rights.
As of this writing, no suspects have been named, and the motive behind the killing remains unclear. Authorities are calling on the public to come forward with any information that could aid in the investigation.
