In a historic and unforgettable night at the 78th Annual Tony Awards, Filipino-Americans Darren Criss and Nicole Scherzinger took center stage — not only to perform but to win.

The two multi-talented artists were awarded Best Actor and Best Actress in a Musical, respectively, marking the first time Filipino performers have simultaneously won major acting categories since Lea Salonga’s iconic 1991 triumph for Miss Saigon.

Criss received the coveted honor for his transformative role in The Silver Line, a bold and emotionally resonant production hailed by critics as one of the year’s most compelling new musicals. Meanwhile, Scherzinger — who first rose to fame as the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls — stunned audiences and critics alike in Sunset Boulevard, delivering a riveting and career-defining performance as Norma Desmond.

Their dual victories are more than personal achievements; they represent a milestone for Filipino pride and Asian representation on Broadway, a stage long underrepresented by Asian artists.

In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Criss paid tribute to his heritage and the trailblazers who paved the way.

“This award is not just for me — it’s for every Filipino kid who’s ever dreamed of standing here,” he declared, drawing cheers from a visibly moved audience.

Scherzinger, equally emotional, reflected on the power of cultural identity in storytelling.

“To be recognized for telling powerful stories and representing my roots means everything to me,” she said.

Their wins come more than three decades after Lea Salonga’s groundbreaking Tony victory, signaling a new chapter of visibility and excellence for Filipino artists in the global performing arts scene.

As the confetti settled at New York’s Lincoln Center, one thing was clear: the future of Broadway is more inclusive, more global—and proudly more Filipino.
