The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday revealed plans to maximize the use of technology in its investigative work, including forensic science, drone patrols and body-worn cameras.

In a radio interview, Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said the PNP currently has 2,700 body cameras, but only 684 can livestream; the rest are used for recording only.

She added that once the national 911 hotline becomes fully operational, PNP Chief Nicolas Torre III wants every police officer to wear a body camera.

The police force also operates about 965 drones, as well as mobile rapid CCTV units and dashcams used during patrols.

Fajardo said the PNP chief is focused on improving investigations by acquiring more advanced forensic tools.

She noted that the Japan International Cooperation Agency donated forensic equipment, although she did not specify the type.

The PNP will also work closely with the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) to ensure that police operations respect human rights, she added.

“Before, there was a perception that the PNP and CHR did not get along. Tomorrow, the PNP Chief will visit the CHR to explain because his statement about increasing arrests was given a negative interpretation,” Fajardo added
