FEU now powered by renewable energy

Far Eastern University (FEU) announced Thursday it is now sourcing 98.31 percent of its total energy from renewable sources, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability.

Edward Kilakiga, FEU vice president for Facilities and Technical Services, said the move is part of the university’s efforts to neutralize its carbon footprint and address climate change.

“Even before sustainability became a trend, the choices FEU made already reflected a strong commitment to resource efficiency and environmental stewardship,” Kilakiga said.

“Our goal to be a clear leader in the sustainability arena builds on this long-standing dedication to minimizing waste and promoting responsible practices,” he added.

FEU began its transition to renewable energy in 2017 through its participation in the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) program, starting with a 1,300 kilowatt (kW) supply that increased to 2,550 kW by 2024.

In 2025, the university further expanded its clean energy portfolio through the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), which now powers portions of FEU Manila, Makati, Diliman, Cavite, and the Roosevelt campuses in Rodriguez, Cainta and Marikina.

As of 26 April, GEOP accounts for 51.07 percent of the university’s renewable energy supply, providing improved energy security, greater cost efficiency and a stronger commitment to environmental sustainability.

Complementing these partnerships, FEU has invested in on-site solar power systems across its campuses. University-wide, FEU increased its solar panel capacity by 369.37 percent in 2024, reaching 468.9 kW peak (kWp), significantly reducing its reliance on non-renewable sources.

A 99.9 kWp rooftop solar system at FEU Roosevelt Rodriguez became operational in April 2019. This was followed by a 112 kWp rooftop solar system at FEU Roosevelt Marikina in April 2024 and a 257 kWp installation at FEU Cavite in May 2024, covering both basic and higher education buildings.

Together, these systems are expected to generate 524,286 kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually and reduce more than 373.4 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

“These initiatives have strengthened our position across the FEU Group,” Kilakiga said. “We invest in sustainable innovations that align with our Aspiration 2028, building momentum as we approach our centennial anniversary.”
