The local government of Manila has called for unity during the 454th anniversary of the Battle of Bangkusay, honoring 300 Filipino warriors who died fighting Spanish forces.

Outgoing Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna, joined by Vice Mayor Yul Servo, led ceremonies in Moriones, Tondo, Manila, where the historic battle took place. Representatives from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, the Division of City Schools-Manila, and local barangay officials also attended and offered flowers.

“We are here in a place rich in history, culture, and the spirit of unity — here in Plaza Moriones in the district of Tondo, where the people are not only industrious and patient, but also inherently skilled and intelligent,” Lacuna said.

“The renewed commemoration of the Battle of Bangkusay here in Tondo is historic because it is a scene that reflects the bravery and patriotic spirit of our ancestors. This important event is joyfully honored by us as a fitting start to our month-long celebration of Manila Day,” she added.

Lacuna stressed that the commemoration proves the heroism, greatness and courage of ancient Filipino warriors who first confronted foreign conquerors during the Battle of Bangkusay on 3 June 1571, are not forgotten.

“The Battle of Bangkusay is not just a part of history but a testament to our identity as a nation and a city with strong convictions,” said Lacuna. “This is one of the events we should look back on and serve as an inspiration for the unity of Filipinos in standing up to defend our sovereignty.”

The mayor added that history should serve not only as a memory but also as a guide. She noted the challenges overcome in Bangkusay should continue to inspire daily struggles.

“Amidst the increasing problems of urbanization, in fighting poverty, in preserving our culture and in promoting a more prosperous and progressive Manila, the spirit of Bangkusay must remain within us,” Lacuna said. “Beyond the grand commemoration, a great challenge for each of us is to internalize and live out the important lessons left to us by the past.”
